What are Analog
Missions?
Analog Missions are field tests in locations that have physical similarities
to the extreme space environments. Engineers and scientists work with
government agencies, academia, and industry to gather requirements for
testing in harsh environments before they are used in space. Tests include:
new technologies, robotic equipment, vehicles, habitats, communications,
power generation, mobility, infrastructure, and storage. Behavioral
effects – such as isolation and confinement, team dynamics, menu
fatigue, and others are also observed.

MARS
SOCIETY KENYA is in the process of establishing a Mars Habitat
Simulation Programme / Research Station to be set up in the country
(in a remote region, probably in the furthest parts of Turkana
County in Northern Kenya), where the citizens and any other willing
party can practice and experiment on a Martian-like environment,
even as we purpose to eventually have a human presence on Mars.
Space Boot Camp will be the entry level and it will be open to
the general public regardless of one's demographic status. Setting
up the boot camp will depend on the nature of the agreement. The
camp will have the necessary infrastructure required to train
astronauts. It will also make use of STEM education and its benefits
to the Space industry. Membership will be in two ways; general
and special. The Mars Society Kenya is working on acquiring a
Space City. The Space City will be a fully-fledged space academy
which will also feature a Mars Simulation Habitat.

OUR GOALS The overall focus of the EMMIHS campaign is on geological,
physical, organizational, and psychological aspects of the HI-SEAS
base and its direct surroundings. Individual mission goals are
set to enable the studies that will allow us to explore and utilize
the Moon and Mars in a safe, efficient, and inspiring way. Within
this wide range of research possibilities, we chose to specifically
deepen into the following projects.
One of the focus points of the EMMIHS campaign is on lava tubes.
Lava tubes are elongated caves with a basaltic volcanic origin
and are a common occurrence in volcanic fields on the Earth, the
Moon, and Mars. pic-1,

The
HI-SEAS Habitat is semi-portable, low-impact, and designed to
have all the desirable analog features specified in Keeton et
al (2011). It has a habitable volume of ~13,000 cubic feet,
a usable floor space of ~1200 square feet, and small sleeping
quarters for a crew of six, as well as a kitchen, laboratory,
bathroom, simulated airlock and ‘dirty’ work area.
Lava
flows include a wide variety of volcanic features to explore,
such as lava tubes, skylights, channels, and tumuli. pic-0,

The
ACC consists of eight experimental chambers designed to simulate
characteristics of the space environment. The chambers have been
used to simulate long-duration space flight, including a 56-day
Skylab mission simulation and a 91-day Lunar Mars Life Support
Test Project. During these simulations, investigators make every
effort to limit supply replenishment and face-to-face contact
with the crew, and the on-board team is responsible to attend
to all interior upkeep and repairs.

Reid
completed the Mars Ocean Odyssey, The longest sea yoyage in
history in June 2010. Now, as humans seek to go on a mission
to Mars, the importance of preparing astronauts psychologically
to be away from the security of land in an isolated, high performance,
life and death environment is more relevant than ever. Reid
and Soanya are initiating the Mars Ocean Analogs on the same
Schooner starship that broke all previous endurance records.
The psychology
and knowledge that Reid and Soanya have learned from actual
experience can be invaluable to the preparations of astronauts
going to space on long duration missions.
